This butterfly species can easily be misidentified with the Heath fritillary (Melitaea athalia). As a rule, this species is somewhat smaller, the net of dark lines forms a more correct orange fields, while the palpi on the butterflies head are usually red. Beside this, the lower side of the wing is darker, and the track that follows the edge of the back is yellow. For a safe identification it is it is necessary to extract the genitalia of the male. This species inhabits meadows and pastures, but usually something more open and dense habitats than the Heath fritillary. The catterpillars feed on genus: Digitalis, Melampyrum, Plantago, Tanacetum, Veronica, etc. his species habitats extends to moderate parts of Europe and Asia, in Serbia it can be found in the whole country, except for the lowland parts of Vojvodina and the areas around major rivers.
